Someday you will be loved.

I really love Death Cab for Cutie. (Who doesn't?) I'm a pop girl at heart, but every once in a while I need my music to have a little more depth than Madonna can offer. Years ago, I used to ask by brother-in-law repeatedly, "What's the name of that band I like again?" Death Cab for Cutie. Death Cab for Cutie.

{Honestly, I like The Postal Service even more, but that came later. I think the song "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" has one of the most achingly honest lines I've ever heard: I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving.}

Well, I was listening to Death Cab yesterday and was struck, for at least the fourth time, by the song "Someday You Will Be Loved." Now, keep in mind, I'm the girl who used to call my bff Carina in junior high to read her random lyrics over the phone. (I would like to say I never read her what I considered to be very inspirational En Vogue lyrics. Yep, I would like to say that.) So, because I'm still that same girl, I have to jot down some of the lyrics to this song.

* I once knew a girl * In the years of my youth * With eyes like the summer *All beauty and truth * In the morning I fled * Left a note and it read * Someday you will be loved. *

* I cannot pretend that I felt any regret * Cause each broken heart will eventually mend *As the blood runs red down the needle and thread * Someday you will be loved. *

* You'll be loved, you'll be loved * Like you never have known * The memories of me * Will seem more like bad dreams * Just a series of blurs * Like I never occurred * Someday you will be loved. *

* You may feel alone when you're falling asleep * And every time tears roll down your cheeks * But I know your heart belongs to someone you've yet to meet * Someday you will be loved. *

Sometimes I hear songs like this one and think that's what my heart would say, if it could. When I listened to it yesterday, I had one of those rare moments where you smile to yourself and know that all is as it should be. Only with time and grace can we look back at the people who once hurt us, smile and think, "Oh, thank God." I wouldn't be where I am now without the people who treated my heart more carelessly than I would have liked and I really like where I am now. There are people who have broken my heart, in one way or another, and hearts I have unintentionally broken myself. I remember when I broke up with this great-on-paper, very nice guy. I told him, "Someday you'll find the person who has been waiting for you her whole life. You deserve that." I knew that as much as I wanted it to be me, it never would be. It broke my heart to have to break his, but not long after, he found that girl and he married her... And I was so happy for him. You know what else? I'm so happy for me. This is an imperfect, lovely life and I wouldn't have it any other way. Our past hurts make us so much stronger, so much wiser and lead us to the love(s) we were meant to find, to the people we were meant to become.

Heartbreak, music and love. It's all that we've got and it's everything.

  1. AH! I love this post, and I love that feeling. The biggest discovery I've made in the last couple years is how to be grateful for things that really realllllly sucked at the time. Looking back on those times and being able to smile and be happy that they happened is just so freeing.

    And I love Death Cab and The Postal Service oh so much. I'll Follow You Into the Dark makes me positively WEEP every time I hear it.

  2. Thank you so much for your great comment, Jasmine! It's soo true... I Will Follow You Into the Dark makes me weep too... :)
