Happy Mother's Day, Mama.

Dear Mama...
Thank you for teaching me to care so much about other people's feelings. Thank you for explaining that you should not go to a person's birthday party unless you are willing to invite them to yours. (That seems fair.) Thank you for making me love my long hair, even if only because that boy cut you gave me as a child was so unattractive. (I forgive you.) Thank you for not letting me have Barbies and thank you for breaking down and letting Grandma give them to me anyway. (I know what you were trying to do and I applaud it, but thanks for understanding that a girl with hair like mine at least needed a Barbie or two to ease the pain.) Thank you for reading to me and teaching me to love getting lost in words. Thank you for telling me that those girls who were mean to me in junior high would grow up to be unhappy. (I didn't believe you, but you were right.) Thank you for teaching me to be opinionated and strong. Thank you for being the number one fan of my first poem and 21 years later, this blog (even if you can't figure out how to comment on it). Thank you for passing down the love of a good cocktail. Thank you for being so funny and so much fun. Thank you for teaching me what it means to be a woman of integrity and substance. Thank you for showing me how to wait for and then love a good man. Thank you for never doubting, even when I did, that I would find love. Thank you for being my mom, but even more than that, thank you for being my friend. (You kind of have to be my mom, but you don't have to be my friend.) Your friendship means more to me than you know. On this day, and every other day, know that I love you.
